A 27-year-old Mission man is facing federal time after being indicted on charges tied to a years-long methamphetamine operation. Adam Dean Stoneman was named in a December 14, 2016, indictment on two counts: Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance and Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance.
Stoneman appeared in U.S. Magistrate Court before Judge Mark A. Moreno on January 5, 2017, where he formally entered a plea of not guilty. The indictment alleges Stoneman was involved in a drug conspiracy spanning from July 1, 2014, to December 14, 2016, across the District of South Dakota.
Authorities further charge that on August 17, 2016, Stoneman possessed methamphetamine in Todd County with the specific intent to distribute. The substance moved through tribal and rural corridors, feeding into a broader underground market policed by federal and tribal task forces.
If convicted, Stoneman faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison and/or a $1,000,000 fine. Additional penalties include a lifetime of supervised release, $200 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund, and forfeiture of seized U.S. currency. The court may also impose restitution.
The investigation was led by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services and the Northern Plains Safe Trails Drug Enforcement Task Force. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney SaraBeth Donovan, underscoring the federal reach into rural drug networks.
Stoneman remains in custody as he awaits trial, scheduled for March 7, 2017. The charges are presumed allegations under federal law—Stoneman is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
