FORT WAYNE, IN – A reckless drive through Fort Wayne International Airport’s parking lot landed 33-year-old Adam Henry of Naperville, Illinois, a hefty 188-month federal prison sentence. Judge Holly A. Brady delivered the sentence following Henry’s guilty plea, a punishment announced Thursday by U.S. Attorney Clifford D. Johnson.
The bust unfolded September 28, 2019, when an Allen County Airport Authority police officer spotted Henry operating a rental vehicle erratically. The officer initiated a traffic stop as Henry exited the airport grounds, quickly discovering the driver lacked a valid license. What began as a simple traffic violation rapidly escalated.
A search of the rental car revealed a hidden handgun tucked under the driver’s seat, and a stash of narcotics. Authorities recovered multiple baggies containing various pills, alongside 53.9 grams of cocaine. The sheer volume of the cocaine suggests Henry wasn’t a casual user, but actively involved in drug distribution, according to court documents.
The investigation, led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), wasn’t a solo effort. The Fort Wayne Police Department, the Fort Wayne Allen County Airport Authority – Public Safety Department, and the Indiana State Police all contributed to building the case against Henry. The multi-agency cooperation highlights the seriousness with which federal authorities are tackling drug and weapons offenses.
Henry’s 188-month sentence – equivalent to 15 years and 8 months – isn’t the end of his federal supervision. Upon release, he’ll face an additional six years of supervised release, a period where his activities will be closely monitored. Assistant U.S. Attorney Lesley J. Miller Lowery prosecuted the case, securing the conviction and lengthy sentence.
The case serves as a stark reminder that seemingly minor traffic infractions can unravel far larger criminal enterprises. Henry’s attempt to skirt the law at Fort Wayne International Airport has cost him over a decade of his life, and a permanent criminal record. The ATF’s Chicago Field Division oversaw the investigation, demonstrating the agency’s commitment to disrupting illegal activity across state lines.
