Adam Middleton, Ammo Possession, Troy NY, 2022

ALBANY, NY – Adam Middleton, 40, of Troy, New York, is looking at a decade behind bars after pleading guilty today to the unlawful possession of ammunition. The case, a collaboration between multiple federal and local agencies, underscores the relentless pursuit of those who illegally stockpile weapons despite prior convictions.

According to court documents, on December 7, 2021, authorities discovered Middleton in possession of a Glock magazine containing 17 rounds of 9mm ammunition, along with a stash of additional rounds, at his Troy residence. This discovery wasn’t a surprise to law enforcement; Middleton already had a felony conviction for criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fifth degree – a conviction that explicitly barred him from legally owning any ammunition.

The bust was the result of a coordinated investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) and its Capital Region Task Force, which includes the Albany Police Department, Albany County Sheriff’s Office, and Schenectady Police Department. The ATF and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) lent support to the USPIS-led effort, demonstrating a unified front against illegal firearms proliferation.

Middleton’s guilty plea doesn’t guarantee a specific sentence, but he’s facing a maximum of 10 years in federal prison. Senior United States District Judge Gary L. Sharpe will hand down the sentence on April 4, 2023, taking into account federal sentencing guidelines and other relevant factors. Following any prison term, Middleton could also be subject to up to three years of supervised release.

U.S. Attorney Carla B. Freedman and Ketty Larco-Ward, Postal Inspector in Charge of the Boston Division of the USPIS, jointly announced the guilty plea. This case serves as a stark reminder that possessing ammunition with a prior felony conviction is a serious federal offense, and those who violate the law will be held accountable.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin S. Clark is prosecuting the case, pushing for a sentence that reflects the gravity of the offense and the potential danger posed by individuals illegally possessing firearms components. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it moves towards sentencing and beyond, providing updates on this and other federal crimes impacting communities across the nation.
