Jeremy Giliberti, Possessing Destructive Devices, New Jersey 2023

TRENTON, NJ – A Burlington County man is facing serious federal charges after authorities say they found a cache of homemade bombs in his vehicle. Jeremy Giliberti, 52, of Mount Laurel, New Jersey, was charged today with possessing four destructive devices, according to U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger.

The discovery was made during a routine traffic stop on July 26, 2023, conducted by officers with the Hamilton Township Police Division. A search of Giliberti’s vehicle revealed a duffle bag containing the four pipe bombs. Investigators detailed that two of the devices were constructed with 5-inch steel pipes, while the other two utilized cardboard tubing reinforced with duct tape. Each bomb was packed with metal pellets, an unidentified explosive mixture, and a pyrotechnic fuse – a recipe for potential devastation.

Federal prosecutors allege that Giliberti knowingly possessed these dangerous devices. The complaint filed in Trenton federal court doesn’t offer a motive for why Giliberti was carrying the bombs, leaving investigators to piece together the puzzle. Giliberti is scheduled to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge Douglas E. Arpert this afternoon. The Grimy Times will be in the courtroom for the proceedings.

If convicted of possessing destructive devices, Giliberti could face a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000. This isn’t just about the explosives themselves, but the potential for widespread harm they represent. Authorities are taking this case extremely seriously.

The investigation was a collaborative effort, involving special agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Newark Field Division, the Hamilton Township Police Division, the New Jersey State Police Bomb Unit, and the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office. ATF Special Agent in Charge Bryan Miller and Hamilton Township Police Chief Kenneth R. DeBoskey were both instrumental in the case, along with Col. Patrick J. Callahan of the NJ State Police and Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo J. Onofri.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Tracey Agnew is handling the prosecution. It’s crucial to remember that the charges against Giliberti are accusations at this stage, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
