Omar Kennedy, Possession of Firearm by Convicted Felon, New Jersey 2019

TRENTON, NJ – A Mercer County man was sentenced to nine years in prison for illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition, a crime that put his domestic partner in fear for her life.

Omar Kennedy, 40, of Trenton, was found guilty of possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon and was sentenced to 108 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Anne E. Thompson on March 4, 2022.

The incident that led to Kennedy’s arrest occurred on May 23, 2019 when the Trenton Police Department responded to a domestic disturbance call at a residence in Trenton. When officers arrived, the female resident reported that Kennedy pointed a firearm at her and threatened to shoot and kill her.

Kennedy repeated his threat over the phone while law enforcement was at the scene, and officers located him in the immediate area of the home. He was found in possession of a loaded firearm with eight rounds of ammunition.

The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Trenton Police Department, and the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office.

The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michelle S. Gasparian of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Criminal Division in Trenton.

Omar Kennedy’s sentence is a stark reminder that violating federal laws regarding firearms can have severe consequences. His actions put the lives of those around him at risk, and he will now face the consequences of his actions in a federal prison for the next nine years.
