Fu Sheng Yang, a 39-year-old man from Taipei City, Taiwan, has been sentenced to 33 months in prison for attempting to smuggle 10,000 rounds of ammunition and 40 upper receivers of guns from the United States to Taiwan.
Yang, who had entered the U.S. legally on June 20, 2017, used his two-day stay to purchase the ammunition and guns, intending to export them illegally. He also attempted to arrange for the purchase of an additional 100 firearms.
Yang’s scheme was foiled when he was stopped by the Arizona Department of Public Safety for speeding on June 22, 2017. The officers found him in possession of the ammunition and upper receivers.
The investigation was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations, the Arizona Department of Public Safety, and the Phoenix Police Department. The prosecution was handled by Lisa E. Jennis and Kristen Brook, Assistant U.S. Attorneys, District of Arizona, Phoenix.
Yang was sentenced by U.S. District Judge G. Murray Snow to 33 months of imprisonment, to be followed by three years of supervised release. He had previously pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to smuggle goods from the United States.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona, is committed to keeping the community safe from weapons-related crimes. This case highlights the importance of vigilant law enforcement and cooperation between agencies.
Yang’s sentence serves as a warning to anyone who would attempt to smuggle guns and ammunition into the country. The District of Arizona will continue to work tirelessly to prevent such crimes and bring perpetrators to justice.
