Dwayne B. Sheron, 36, of Maple Heights, is facing federal charges for illegally possessing a firearm, according to a newly unsealed indictment. The charge stems from the discovery of a 9 mm handgun in his possession—firearms access strictly prohibited due to his criminal history.
Sheron has been convicted three times for drug trafficking, a record that automatically bars him from owning or carrying a gun under federal law. Despite that, authorities say he was found in possession of the weapon and accompanying ammunition, triggering a federal prosecution.
The indictment, returned by a federal grand jury, accuses Sheron of violating federal statutes governing firearm possession by prohibited persons. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Cleveland Division of Police, agencies that have intensified efforts to remove guns from violent offenders.
Assistant United States Attorney Brian S. Deckert is leading the prosecution. The case now moves toward trial, where federal prosecutors will be required to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Sheron knowingly possessed the firearm after his felony convictions.
If convicted, Sheron’s sentence will be determined by the court, weighing factors such as his prior criminal record, his role in the offense, and the nature of the violation. While the statutory maximum penalty applies, actual sentences often fall below that threshold based on federal guidelines.
