Local Man Pleads Guilty to Firearms Charge

A 47-year-old Piedmont man has admitted to a firearms charge in federal court, according to a statement released by U.S. Attorney William Ihlenfeld.

Michael Anthony Coleman, a resident of Piedmont, West Virginia, pleaded guilty to one count of ‘Unlawful Possession of Firearm.’ The charge stems from an incident in November 2021, in which Coleman was found to be in possession of three rifles and three pistols in Mineral County.

Coleman is prohibited from having a firearm due to a prior conviction. He faces up to 10 years of incarceration and a fine of up to $250,000. The actual sentence imposed will be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Kimberley D. Crockett is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government, with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives conducting the investigation.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert W. Trumble presided over the case.

Coleman’s guilty plea marks a significant development in the case, which highlights the importance of enforcing firearms laws and protecting public safety. The case serves as a reminder that those prohibited from possessing firearms will be held accountable for their actions.

The case is ongoing, and Coleman is expected to face sentencing in the coming weeks. The outcome of the case will be closely watched by law enforcement officials and the community at large.
