Eric Holloway, a 42-year-old man from Bishopville, has pled guilty to possession of a firearm by a prohibited person in federal court. This charge is a violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 922(g)(1), and carries significant penalties.
The guilty plea was entered on Monday in federal court in Florence, with United States District Judge R. Bryan Harwell accepting the plea. Holloway will be sentenced after the U.S. Probation Office prepares a presentence report.
According to evidence presented at the guilty plea hearing, Holloway was involved in illegal gun sales. ATF agents introduced an undercover informant to Holloway, who then purchased a 9mm Taurus pistol and 22 rounds of ammo from him on March 8, 2016, in Hartsville, South Carolina. The sale was recorded on audio and video, providing concrete evidence of Holloway’s wrongdoing.
Holloway is a convicted felon and is therefore legally prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition. The firearm in question had previously traveled in interstate commerce, giving federal agents jurisdiction over the offense. This highlights the seriousness of Holloway’s actions and the importance of enforcing federal gun laws.
United States Attorney Beth Drake stated that the maximum penalty Holloway can receive is a fine of $250,000 and/or imprisonment for 10 years, plus a special assessment of $100. This significant penalty reflects the gravity of the charge and the need to prevent prohibited individuals from accessing firearms.
The case was investigated by agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), with Assistant United States Attorney Buddy Bethea of the Florence office handling the case. The successful investigation and prosecution of this case demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement agencies to combating gun crime and keeping communities safe.
