Adam Scott Mitchell, Child Pornography Production, Tennessee 2015

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. — In a shocking case of child exploitation, Adam Scott Mitchell, 31, of Appalachia, Va., was sentenced to serve 300 months in prison by the Honorable Leon Jordan, Senior U.S. District Judge.

Mitchell pleaded guilty in January 2015 to a federal grand jury indictment charging him with the production of child pornography.

The production of child pornography is a federal crime that carries severe penalties, including lengthy prison sentences and lifetime supervision. In this case, Mitchell’s crimes were particularly egregious, as he produced movies and still images of a young child who was the daughter of his live-in girlfriend.

The indictment and subsequent conviction of Mitchell were the result of an investigation conducted by the U.S. Marshals Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Virginia State Police, Big Stone Gap Police Department, Johnson City Police Department, and Kingsport Police Department.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Helen Smith represented the United States in the case. This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006.

Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.

Upon his release from prison, Mitchell was ordered to remain on federal supervised release for the remainder of his life and is subject to numerous special conditions of release which restrict his access to children and the internet.

Mitchell was previously convicted of indecent liberties with a minor under the age of 15 in Wise County, Va., and violating Virginia’s Sex Offender Registry Law in Scott County, Va.
