Adam Scott Mitchell, Child Pornography, Tennessee 2015

Greenwood, TN – In a disturbing case of child exploitation, Adam Scott Mitchell, a 31-year-old man from Appalachia, Virginia, was recently sentenced to serve 300 months in federal prison for producing child pornography.

The court ordered Mitchell to remain on federal supervised release for the remainder of his life upon his release from prison. He will be subject to numerous special conditions of release, including restrictions on his access to children and the internet.

Mitchell’s conviction stems from a 2014 investigation, where he was found to have produced movies and still images of a young child, who was the daughter of his live-in girlfriend. The disturbing content included Mitchell engaging in sexual activity with the child and other illegal sexual conduct.

Mitchell has a previous conviction for indecent liberties with a minor under the age of 15 in Wise County, Virginia, and violating Virginia’s Sex Offender Registry Law in Scott County, Virginia.

Authorities arrested Mitchell in Kingsport, Tennessee, in August 2014. His indictment and subsequent conviction were the result of a joint investigation conducted by the U.S. Marshals Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Virginia State Police, Big Stone Gap Police Department, Johnson City Police Department, and Kingsport Police Department.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Helen Smith represented the United States in this case.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
