Adan Godinez, Attempted Murder, Illinois 2016

A brazen attempt on the lives of two DEA Task Force officers in Joliet has landed a Morris man behind bars. Adan Godinez, 31, has been indicted on attempted murder charges in connection with the August 30, 2016, undercover drug sting.

According to the indictment, Godinez got out of his car and entered the undercover’s vehicle, providing cocaine to the officer. As law enforcement personnel approached, Godinez pulled out a firearm and shot at the officers, sparking an exchange of gunfire.

Godinez was wounded but survived the ordeal, while no officers were injured. He and co-defendant Fernando Godinez, 44, of Cicero, were taken into custody in the mall parking lot and have remained in custody without bond.

The indictment charges Godinez with attempted murder, conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute a controlled substance, possession with the intent to distribute a controlled substance, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and brandishing and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence.

Godinez’s co-defendant, Fernando Godinez, faces charges of conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute a controlled substance, possession with the intent to distribute a controlled substance, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

The sting operation was arranged after Godinez agreed to sell cocaine to an undercover Task Force officer, who was unaware of Godinez’s intentions.

Adan Godinez’s arraignment is scheduled for October 27, 2016, at 11:30 a.m. before U.S. Magistrate Judge Susan E. Cox.

The charges against Godinez carry a mandatory minimum sentence of 35 years in prison and a maximum sentence of life in prison. Fernando Godinez faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years and a maximum of life in prison.
