Adrian L. Stargell, 39, a former Bureau of Prisons corrections officer turned Education Specialist at FCI-Aliceville in Alabama, has been sentenced to 42 months in federal prison for sexually assaulting two incarcerated women on multiple occasions. The sentence, handed down in Tuscaloosa federal court, also includes three years of supervised release, marking a rare but overdue reckoning for abuse of power inside a federal lockup.
Stargell pleaded guilty to two counts of violating the civil rights of incarcerated women through sexual assault, along with one count of making false statements to federal investigators from the U.S. Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General (OIG). His crimes occurred during 2017 and 2018 while he was on duty, exploiting his position to prey on vulnerable women under federal custody.
Court documents reveal that Stargell knowingly engaged in illegal sexual contact with the two women, fully aware he was breaking the law. As a corrections official, his duty was to uphold order and safety, not weaponize his authority for personal gratification. When OIG agents confronted him with evidence, Stargell lied outright, denying any sexual contact with the victims—further compounding his betrayal.
“The Department of Justice will not tolerate corrections officers who sexually assault individuals whom they are otherwise supposed to protect and keep safe,” said Assistant Attorney General Eric Dreiband. “The Civil Rights Division will continue to vigorously prosecute these cases and secure justice for victims of these egregious crimes.”
U.S. Attorney Prim Escalona of the Northern District of Alabama called the sentence a milestone for accountability: “Today justice was served for the victims of these egregious crimes. We will continue to aggressively prosecute those who abuse authority and prey on vulnerable people in their care.” James F. Boyersmith, Special Agent in Charge of the OIG Miami Field Office, added, “Stargell abused his power, sexually assaulted two inmates, and lied to try to cover up his actions. Today, justice is served.”
The investigation was conducted by the Department of Justice OIG Miami Field Office. Prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Posey, with Special Litigation Counsel Fara Gold and Trial Attorney Anna Gotfryd of the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division Criminal Section leading the charge. The case underscores the federal government’s growing resolve to root out systemic abuse in correctional facilities—where power imbalances too often go unchecked.
