Fed Charges Former Professor in Sex Abuse Probe
Matthew Queen, a 41-year-old professor from New York, was arraigned yesterday on a Criminal Information charging him with falsification of records in connection with falsified notes he produced to the FBI related to an ongoing federal investigation.
Queen allegedly attempted to interfere with a federal grand jury investigation by creating false notes in an attempt to corroborate his own lies, said U.S. Attorney Damian Williams. The criminal obstruction charge announced today should exemplify the seriousness of attempts by any individual to manipulate or interfere with a federal investigation.
FBI Assistant Director in Charge James Smith said Queen’s alleged actions deliberately violated a court order and delayed justice for the sexual abuse victims. Queen’s alleged interference with the investigation was a betrayal of the trust placed in him as an interim Provost, Smith added.
According to the allegations in the Information filed today in Manhattan federal court, the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the FBI have been investigating allegations of sexual abuse and misconduct related to a national religious denomination and its affiliated entities. A grand jury subpoena was issued to a seminary affiliated with the denomination in October 2022, requiring the production of all documents related to allegations of sexual abuse.
However, instead of cooperating with the investigation, Queen allegedly directed a Seminary employee to destroy a document describing a sexual abuse allegation. He then provided false notes to the FBI during an interview, stating he had not heard the employee directed to destroy the document.
The FBI will never tolerate those who intentionally lie and mislead our investigation in an attempt to conceal their malicious behavior, said Smith. Queen’s actions demonstrate a clear disregard for the law and a willingness to compromise the integrity of the investigation.
Queen is scheduled to appear in court on [date] to answer the charges against him.
