New York – New York Attorney General Letitia James today rallied a coalition of 20 state attorneys general to support Harvard University’s legal battle against the federal government’s illegal cancellation of over $2 billion in research funding. The coalition argues that this unprecedented move threatens not only Harvard’s scientific endeavors but also the economic and public health of states like New York.
In an amicus brief filed in the U.S. District Court for Massachusetts, Attorney General James stated, ‘Our research universities are vital to innovation and public health advances. The federal government’s sudden withdrawal of funding from Harvard endangers thousands of jobs and crucial research on diseases like ALS and breast cancer.’
The federal government demanded Harvard comply with certain conditions to receive committed funding, prompting the university to refuse and leading to the funding freeze. Harvard has since filed a lawsuit seeking to declare the administration’s actions unlawful.
Attorney General James and the coalition are advocating for expedited judgment in favor of Harvard, emphasizing that the funding freeze poses a threat to other states’ economies if their research institutions face similar treatment. They highlight the significant role these universities play in economic growth, education, and public health.
In New York alone, independent research institutions support tens of thousands of jobs and generate millions in economic activity, contributing to various sectors including public health, education, and housing. The coalition warns that a funding freeze would lead to halted projects, layoffs, and the loss of scientific talent.
Joining Attorney General James are attorneys general from California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia. The coalition calls for an immediate end to the unlawful funding freeze.
