Agency Village Man Charged with Involuntary Manslaughter
Agency Village, SD – In a shocking turn of events, 36-year-old John Henry Sargeant has been indicted for Involuntary Manslaughter, a federal charge that carries severe penalties.
According to court documents, Sargeant was charged on September 10, 2013, after a federal grand jury handed down the indictment. He appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge William D. Gerdes on September 12, 2013, and pled not guilty to the charges.
The maximum penalty upon conviction is up to 8 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
The investigation into Sargeant’s alleged crimes is being led by the Sisseton-Wahpeton Tribal Police Department, Bureau of Indian Affairs Law Enforcement Services, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas J. Wright is prosecuting the case.
Sargeant was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial. A trial date has not been set, leaving the fate of Sargeant and the victims in limbo.
