A disturbing case has come to light in Buffalo, New York, where a 35-year-old man, Luis Aguilar Torres, has been caught attempting to reenter the United States after being convicted of an aggravated felony.
Torres, who holds dual citizenship of the United Kingdom and Ecuador, was found to have attempted to cross into the country from Canada at the Rainbow Bridge on September 19, 2016. Once his identity was confirmed, it was discovered that he had a history of serious crimes.
In 2000, Torres was arrested in Queens County, New York, for murder, murder in the 2nd degree, robbery in the 1st degree, and criminal possession of a weapon. The following year, he pleaded guilty to the robbery charge and was sentenced to five years in prison.
After serving his sentence, Torres was deported from the United States and banned for life. However, it appears that he has now attempted to reenter the country, prompting federal authorities to take action.
The case was investigated by United States Customs and Border Protection, under the direction of Director of Field Operations Rose Hilmey. Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott S. Allen, Jr., has been handling the case and will be seeking a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, along with a fine of $250,000.
Torres is scheduled to be sentenced on February 7, 2017, before U.S. District Judge Lawrence J. Vilardo. This case highlights the importance of border security and the consequences of reentering the country after being convicted of a serious crime.
The guilty plea is a stark reminder that those who attempt to evade the law will face the full force of justice. The people of Buffalo and the United States can rest assured that authorities are working tirelessly to keep their communities safe.
