Bombing in New York City Leaves 30 Injured and Millions in Damages
Ahmad Khan Rahimi, 28, of Elizabeth, New Jersey, has been charged in Manhattan federal court with eight counts of offenses related to his alleged bombing and attempted bombing in New York City on September 17.
Rahimi allegedly detonated and attempted to detonate bombs on public streets in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, causing injuries to over 30 people and millions of dollars in property damage. The first bomb, known as the 23rd Street Bomb, exploded at around 8:30 p.m., shattering windows and causing debris to fly everywhere. The blast propelled a 100-pound dumpster over 120 feet and injured numerous people.
The second bomb, the 27th Street Bomb, was discovered shortly after the first explosion. Although it failed to detonate, it was found to be connected to a cellular telephone, which was likely used as a timer. The bomb was also packed with an explosive main charge, ball bearings, and steel nuts.
Earlier that day, a third bomb exploded in Seaside Park, New Jersey, along the route of the Seaside Semper Five Marine Corps Charity 5K race. The start of the race was delayed due to other law enforcement activity.
On September 18, additional bombs were found inside a backpack at the Elizabeth New Jersey Transit station. One of the devices detonated as law enforcement attempted to defuse it. Rahimi was arrested the next day, on September 19, in Linden, New Jersey, after firing multiple shots at police officers and injuring several of them.
Rahimi has been charged with eight counts, including malicious destruction of property, use of a destructive device in furtherance of a crime of violence, and terrorism. He is currently facing justice in a federal court for his alleged violent acts of terrorism.
According to Acting Assistant Attorney General Mary B. McCord, Rahimi’s actions were a threat to national security, and the National Security Division will continue to pursue those who seek to conduct attacks on the homeland. U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara added that Rahimi will face justice for his alleged violent acts of terrorism.
