HARRISBURG woman Aida Crespo, 44, was sentenced to 20 months in prison for submitting approximately 27 fraudulent tax returns to the Internal Revenue Service, announced the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.
According to United States Attorney Bruce D. Brandler, between the years 2007 and 2011, Crespo made numerous false representations in the preparation of income tax returns for herself and for others in order to maximize refund amounts.
The fraudulent tax returns included misrepresenting Schedule C income, listing fictitious dependents and manipulating filing status. As a result, the United States Treasury issued approximately $75,000 in refunds to individuals which exceeded the amount that they were entitled to receive.
The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division. Assistant United States Attorney Chelsea Schinnour prosecuted the case.
Crespo’s sentence was handed down by Chief United States District Court Judge Christopher C. Conner on [date].
The case highlights the need for vigilance in tax preparation and the severe consequences for those who engage in tax fraud.
