
A 19-year-old North Carolina man has been arrested for allegedly participating in the assault on law enforcement during the January 6th breach of the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. According to reports, Aiden Henry Bilyard, of Cary, North Carolina, is charged with engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds, civil disorder, and assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers with a dangerous weapon, among other charges.
On January 6th, 2021, Bilyard allegedly used a bear spray canister to incapacitate law enforcement officers attempting to secure the building. He was also seen encouraging an individual to strike a glass window with an axe and using a bat to shatter the window. Bilyard then entered a Senate room through the broken window.
The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section. Valuable assistance was provided by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina.
The case is being investigated by the FBI’s Charlotte Field Office. Valuable assistance was provided by the FBI’s Washington Field Office, the Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Capitol Police.
Bilyard was arrested in Raleigh, North Carolina, on [current date] and made his initial appearance in the Eastern District of North Carolina later that day. He was released pending further court proceedings.
