A 21-year-old Chinese national allegedly snapped photos of sensitive military aircraft at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue, Nebraska, sparking a frantic FBI manhunt that ended at JFK Airport in New York.
Tianrui Liang crossed the Canadian border on March 28, 2026, on a valid visa, but authorities say he had a hidden agenda. He visited Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota days before his Nebraska jaunt, raising suspicions.
After being confronted by the FBI in Nebraska, Liang allegedly jetted to New York, where he was arrested on April 7, 2026. But a magistrate judge released him, only to have the decision overturned on appeal. Liang is now back in federal custody, facing trial for espionage.
“Any individuals who unlawfully attempt to acquire sensitive information about military aircraft located in the District of Nebraska will be held maximumly accountable under federal law,” warned U.S. Attorney Lesley Woods.
