Phoenix, Ariz. – The grimy underbelly of federal immigration law took center stage on August 5 as a federal grand jury in Phoenix indicted Anxhela Spahi, a 43-year-old citizen of Albania, for willfully refusing to depart the United States within the legally mandated 90-day period following the finalization of her order of removal.
Spahi now stands accused of thumbing her nose at American authority, a crime that carries the severe penalty of up to $250,000 in fines, four years behind bars, and one year of supervised release. This case is an unwelcome addition to Operation Take Back America, a national crusade led by the Department of Justice that aims to combat illegal immigration, dismantle cartels, and protect communities from criminals.
Operation Take Back America coordinates efforts from various task forces, including the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN), ensuring a comprehensive approach to crime. The investigation into Spahi’s case was conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, while the United States Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona, Phoenix, is tasked with prosecution.
It is important to note that an indictment is merely an accusation of criminal conduct, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
