Incognito Bandit Nabbed at Dulles Airport

BOSTON – In a stunning turn of events, the ‘Incognito Bandit’ – a notorious bank robber – was apprehended at Dulles International Airport in Virginia on Friday evening. Albert Taderera, 36, of Brighton, Massachusetts, was arrested as he attempted to board a flight to South Africa.

Taderera is accused of carrying out 16 brazen bank robberies in the Metro-West and Greater Boston areas between February 2015 and March 2017. The robberies all shared a chilling similarity – the perpetrator would enter the bank, donning a dark hooded sweatshirt, face mask, sunglasses, dark gloves, and dark clothing, and would display a black semi-automatic handgun to demands cash from the tellers.

The FBI launched an exhaustive investigation, following a trail of clues that led them to a black BMW sedan, which was spotted outside a local bank in Concord. The vehicle was towed and inventoried, and it was later discovered that the registration was revoked. An individual identifying himself as Taderera called the tow company to inquire about the status of his vehicle, which raised suspicions.

Further investigation revealed that Taderera had booked a flight from Boston to Dulles International Airport, and had rebooked his ticket to Johannesburg, South Africa. The FBI was hot on his heels, and Taderera was apprehended prior to boarding his flight.

Taderera is scheduled to appear in the U.S. District Court for the District of Eastern Virginia on Monday, March 27, 2017, for his initial appearance. If convicted, he faces a sentence of up to 25 years in prison, five years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000.

The investigation was a collaborative effort between the FBI, the Concord Police Department, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kenneth G. Shine will be prosecuting the case.

The ‘Incognito Bandit’ case is a stark reminder of the importance of community vigilance and the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies in bringing perpetrators to justice.
