Isaiah Gallegos, Armed Bank Robbery, New Mexico 2016

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Another piece of the March 2016 US Bank robbery on Wyoming Blvd. NE has fallen into place. Isaiah Gallegos, 22, of Albuquerque, today admitted in federal court that he played a part in the brazen daylight heist, pleading guilty to the charge of armed bank robbery. This closes the book on the prosecution of four individuals connected to the crime.

The case began to unfold in March 2016 when Albuquerque Police Department (APD) officers spotted a vehicle carrying four men pull up to the US Bank branch located at 5620 Wyoming Blvd. NE. Witnesses and subsequent investigation revealed a calculated plan: three men remained in the vehicle while a fourth stormed the bank, brandishing a threat to shoot employees and demanding cash. Two tellers complied, filling a plastic bag with an undisclosed amount of money.

Federal indictments followed on April 27, 2016, naming Isaiah Gallegos, along with Greg Miera, 51, Christian Herrera, 20, Christopher Gallegos, 33, and Martin Huertta, 44, all residents of Albuquerque, as participants in the bank robbery. Today’s proceedings revealed Gallegos’ specific role: he acted as lookout during the robbery, ensuring the path was clear for his co-defendants to carry out the theft.

Gallegos isn’t the first to fall. Martin Huertta pled guilty on September 9, 2016, and received a 108-month prison sentence on March 14, 2017, followed by five years of supervised release. Greg Miera entered a guilty plea on October 11, 2016, while Christian Herrera and Christopher Gallegos followed suit on February 13, 2017, and February 24, 2017, respectively. All four now await sentencing.

Each of the four defendants – Isaiah Gallegos, Herrera, Christopher Gallegos, and Miera – faces a statutory maximum penalty of 25 years behind federal bars. They will remain in custody while awaiting their sentencing hearings. The FBI’s Albuquerque office, in conjunction with APD, spearheaded the investigation that brought these criminals to justice.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Letitia C. Simms is handling the prosecution of this case, ensuring those responsible for terrorizing bank employees and stealing from the community are held accountable. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as sentencing dates are announced and further details emerge.
