ALBUQUERQUE – Anthony Lutz, 43, of Albuquerque, isn’t just a collector. He’s a dealer – an illegal dealer. Lutz pleaded guilty today to unlawfully dealing in firearms, a conviction stemming from a four-year operation that saw him peddle dozens of guns for profit, with some ending up at decidedly grim destinations.
The scheme, active between 2019 and 2023, unraveled after Mexican police recovered one of Lutz’s rifles at a crime scene in 2022. That single find triggered an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), which quickly spiraled into a cross-border nightmare. Agents traced eleven additional firearms connected to Lutz – six used in Albuquerque crimes, and six surfacing at crime scenes south of the border. The total count of firearms linked to Lutz? Approximately 82, with a disturbing pattern: fifty of them were the same two models of AR-15 rifles.
Court documents reveal Lutz wasn’t just reselling. He was actively building receivers into functional firearms, effectively manufacturing weapons to fuel his illicit trade. He then advertised and sold these guns online, utilizing platforms like JasonsGuns.com to reach a customer base apparently unconcerned with the legality – or the ultimate destination – of their purchases. This wasn’t hobby collecting; it was a calculated, profit-driven operation.
As part of his plea agreement, Lutz admitted to the full scope of his operation. While facing a potentially lengthy prison sentence, the agreement outlines a recommended punishment of five years of probation and a $30,000 fine. Whether the judge will accept this recommendation remains to be seen, but it’s a slap on the wrist for a man who demonstrably armed criminals on both sides of an international border.
The announcement of Lutz’s guilty plea came jointly from Acting U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Brendan Iber, Special Agent in Charge of the Phoenix Field Division of the ATF. This case wasn’t conducted in a vacuum; it falls under the umbrella of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF), a multi-agency initiative aimed at dismantling major criminal organizations. The feds are clearly sending a message: arming criminals carries serious consequences, even if those criminals operate across national lines.
