A Fresno County man has been sentenced to over 5 years in prison for illegal possession of ammunition. Alejandro Chavarria, 34, of Mendota, was sentenced to five years and four months in prison by U.S. District Judge Dale A. Drozd on September 24, 2021.
According to court documents, Chavarria was arrested on October 10, 2020, in Oakhurst, California, after attempting to flee from police while in possession of a handgun with a loaded extended magazine, two disassembled AR-style rifles, and numerous rounds of ammunition.
Chavarria has a history of violent crime, having been previously convicted of attempted carjacking, drug possession, and robbery. As a result, he is prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition. At the time of his arrest, he was on parole for robbery.
The case was a collaborative effort between Homeland Security Investigations, the Fresno Police Department, the Madera County Sheriff’s Office, the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Katherine Schuh prosecuted the case as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a Department of Justice initiative aimed at reducing violent crime. Project Safe Neighborhoods focuses on identifying and addressing the most pressing violent crime problems in communities and developing comprehensive solutions to address them.
The case against Chavarria serves as an example of the effectiveness of Project Safe Neighborhoods in reducing violent crime. By working together to identify and prosecute violent offenders, law enforcement agencies can make their communities safer.
