RAPID CITY, SD – Alex Jaramillo, 36, of Pine Ridge, South Dakota, will spend the next 15 years in federal prison after being sentenced for his role in a methamphetamine distribution conspiracy. U.S. District Judge Jeffrey L. Viken handed down the sentence on June 30, 2023, bringing a close – for now – to a case that stretched back to the summer of 2021.
Jaramillo was indicted by a federal grand jury in July 2021, accused of conspiring with others to flood South Dakota and surrounding areas with methamphetamine. He eventually pleaded guilty in March of this year, admitting to his involvement in the drug scheme that spanned from March to June 2021. The details of the conspiracy, while not fully released, suggest a network operating to move significant quantities of the highly addictive drug.
Federal prosecutors, led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Patterson, successfully argued for the lengthy sentence, citing the damage caused by methamphetamine and the need to deter others from engaging in similar criminal activity. In addition to the prison term, Jaramillo will face five years of supervised release upon his eventual release and has been ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund – a small restitution for the harm he inflicted.
The investigation wasn’t a solo effort. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) took the lead, working alongside the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation and the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office. This multi-agency cooperation highlights the ongoing struggle to combat drug trafficking in the region, a fight that often requires pooling resources and expertise.
Jaramillo was immediately taken into the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following the sentencing. His case serves as a stark reminder that dealing in dangerous narcotics carries serious consequences, and federal law enforcement agencies are actively working to dismantle these operations. The streets of Pine Ridge are a little less saturated with poison today, but the fight is far from over.
U.S. Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell, speaking through a Department of Justice release, confirmed the sentence. While the agency touts successes like this, Grimy Times will continue to track the ripple effects of drug trafficking and the individuals preying on vulnerable communities in South Dakota and beyond.
