Rayfeal Roman, Conspiracy to Distribute Cocaine, New Jersey 2024

Jersey City, New Jersey, is reeling after the arrest of 34-year-old Rayfeal Roman on federal charges tied to a sprawling cocaine trafficking conspiracy. Authorities unsealed a criminal complaint accusing Roman of distributing 500 grams or more of cocaine, with evidence culled from a months-long wiretap, surveillance, and a raid that uncovered 2.5 kilograms of the drug stashed in his apartment.

Roman was taken into custody on unrelated state charges last month and remains locked up as federal prosecutors move forward. He is set to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark Falk in Newark federal court later this week for his initial hearing. The charge of conspiracy to distribute cocaine carries a mandatory minimum of five years in prison, a maximum of 40 years behind bars, and a $2 million fine.

According to court documents, law enforcement in New Jersey has been tracking a major drug network involving Roman and multiple associates since September 2017. The investigation relied heavily on court-authorized wiretaps, physical surveillance, and deep dives into financial and phone records. Intercepted calls revealed Roman negotiating high-volume cocaine sales with co-conspirators in real time.

One such exchange, captured on Feb. 6-7, 2018, detailed a $29,500 deal for a kilogram of cocaine. Roman allegedly directed a conspirator to retrieve the drugs from his Jersey City apartment, where the transaction was to be completed before resale to another unnamed buyer. That same apartment became the epicenter of a major law enforcement raid.

Armed with a search warrant, federal agents stormed Roman’s home and seized approximately 2.5 kilograms of cocaine, nearly $30,000 in cash, and tools of the drug trade: a digital scale, packaging materials, and an electronic money-counting machine. The haul underscores the scale and sophistication of the alleged operation.

The case was led by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office under Prosecutor Esther Suarez and DEA special agents directed by Valerie A. Nickerson. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan W. Romankow is prosecuting. As with all federal cases, the charges are accusations—Roman is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
