A Philadelphia man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in a massive cocaine trafficking organization, which purchased over 100 kilograms of cocaine in Puerto Rico and shipped it to residences in Philadelphia and southern New Jersey.
Jose Gonzalez, 51, was sentenced to 120 months in prison for conspiring to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine. He was also ordered to serve five years of supervised release and forfeit $120,900, a 9mm handgun, and a Dodge Ram 3500 pickup truck.
Gonzalez and other conspirators traveled to Puerto Rico on commercial flights from Philadelphia International Airport, purchasing multi-kilogram quantities of cocaine from wholesale drug suppliers. They then shipped the cocaine by overnight delivery to addresses in Philadelphia and southern New Jersey, where Gonzalez resold it to other dealers for a profit.
When Gonzalez was arrested in August 2020, agents seized over $120,000 in cash and a 9mm handgun from his residence and an auto garage he operated in Philadelphia. As part of his plea agreement, Gonzalez agreed to forfeit the seized property.
The investigation was led by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Philadelphia Division, the FBI’s Atlantic City Resident Agency, and the Philadelphia Police Department, among others. Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick C. Askin represented the government in the case.
Gonzalez’s sentencing is a significant blow to the cocaine trafficking organization, which had been operating in the Philadelphia area for over a year. The organization’s activities had a significant impact on the community, and Gonzalez’s sentence is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies to combating violent crime.
