MONROE, La. – In a shocking turn of events, a Mexican national has pleaded guilty to possessing cocaine with intent to distribute.
Gerson D. Guevara-Miranda, 34, of Mexico, entered a conditional guilty plea before U.S. Magistrate Judge Karen L. Hayes on one count of possession with intent to distribute cocaine. The plea will become final when accepted by U.S. District Judge Robert G. James.
According to evidence presented at the guilty plea, Louisiana State Police conducted a traffic stop on Guevara-Miranda’s vehicle on May 23, 2014. After a search of the vehicle, more than one kilogram of powdered cocaine and 23 kilograms of marijuana were found.
Guevara-Miranda faces 20 years in prison, three or more years supervised release, and a $1 million fine.
The investigation was conducted by the DEA, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement-Homeland Security Investigations, and the Louisiana State Police. Assistant U.S. Attorney Seth D. Reeg is prosecuting the case.
A sentencing date of May 4, 2015 was set.
