Georgia Couple Busted in Albuquerque Meth Bust
Alex Thomas Burns, 24, of Atlanta, Ga., and Riana Latel Cunningham, 22, of Stockebridge, Ga., are facing federal methamphetamine trafficking charges after being arrested in Albuquerque, N.M.
According to court documents, Burns and Cunningham were stopped by officers during a routine traffic stop on Interstate 40 on the west side of Albuquerque on February 3, 2015. After Burns allegedly consented to have the officer search the vehicle, more than nine kilograms of methamphetamine were found.
The methamphetamine was discovered in a vehicle driven by Burns and Cunningham, who were arrested at the scene. If convicted, each faces a statutory maximum penalty of not less than ten years and not more than life in prison.
Charges in complaints are merely accusations and defendants are presumed innocent unless found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. This case was investigated by the Border Enforcement Security Taskforce of Homeland Security Investigations and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Joel R. Meyers.
The arrest of Burns and Cunningham is a significant blow to the methamphetamine trade in New Mexico. The operation of the Border Enforcement Security Taskforce demonstrates the commitment of law enforcement agencies to combating transnational crime.
The case highlights the importance of interagency cooperation in preventing the flow of illicit substances into the United States. The prosecution of Burns and Cunningham serves as a warning to those involved in the methamphetamine trade that they will be held accountable for their actions.
