Travis Carter, Cocaine Possession, Louisiana 2021

Metairie man Travis Carter, 42, is staring down a federal prison sentence after a grand jury indicted him on charges of possession with intent to distribute cocaine, a violation of the Federal Controlled Substances Act.

The one-count indictment, handed down November 19, 2021, in New Orleans, accuses Carter of holding a significant quantity of cocaine with the intent to push it on Louisiana streets. Federal prosecutors allege the arrest and evidence seizure were the result of a coordinated investigation targeting drug distribution networks in Jefferson Parish.

If convicted, CARTER faces up to twenty (20) years behind bars, a fine of up to $1,000,000, and no less than three (3) years of supervised release after any prison term. A $100 mandatory special assessment fee will also be imposed, regardless of sentencing.

The Drug Enforcement Administration, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, and St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office jointly led the investigation, executing search warrants and gathering physical evidence that prosecutors say directly ties Carter to the crime. Details of the seizure, including the exact weight of the narcotics, remain sealed but are expected to emerge during pre-trial proceedings.

Assistant United States Attorney Ben Myers is leading the prosecution. U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans emphasized that while the indictment is serious, it is not a verdict. “The indictment is merely a charging document,” Evans stated. “The guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.”

Carter remains presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. His next appearance is pending as federal authorities build their case in one of the latest crackdowns on narcotics trafficking in southeastern Louisiana.
