LAS VEGAS – Alexis Catalan, a 41-year-old Las Vegas woman, is headed to federal prison for seven years after admitting to running a significant methamphetamine distribution operation. Catalan was sentenced on Friday to 84 months behind bars, followed by four years of supervised release. The case lays bare the continued flow of narcotics through the city, despite ongoing law enforcement efforts.
Court documents reveal that between January 30, 2020, and March 26, 2020, Catalan peddled a staggering 391.9 grams of methamphetamine – a Schedule II controlled substance – to various individuals. The investigation didn’t stop at sales; authorities also discovered she was hoarding an additional 271.8 grams of the drug, clearly indicating intent to continue the illicit trade. This wasn’t a small-time operation; Catalan was a significant link in the supply chain.
Catalan pleaded guilty in August 2021 to one count of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, a charge carrying a hefty potential sentence. U.S. District Judge James C. Mahan handed down the 84-month sentence, acknowledging the severity of the crime and the damage inflicted by methamphetamine on the community. The plea and sentencing represent a hard-fought victory for federal prosecutors.
The investigation wasn’t limited to Catalan. Two co-defendants, Justin Wright, 36, and Daniel Leath, 29, were also caught in the net. Both men pleaded guilty to being felons in possession of a firearm – a common companion to the drug trade. Wright received a 24-month prison sentence in September 2021, while Leath was sentenced to 30 months in November 2021, highlighting the interconnectedness of drug trafficking and weapons offenses.
The announcement of Catalan’s sentence came from Acting U.S. Attorney Christopher Chiou for the District of Nevada and Francisco Burrola, Special Agent in Charge for Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). Chiou’s office has been aggressively targeting drug trafficking rings in the state, and this case is another example of their commitment. Burrola’s HSI team played a crucial role in building the case against Catalan and her associates.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) also contributed significantly to the investigation, demonstrating the importance of interagency cooperation in combating crime. Assistant U.S. Attorney Dan Cowhig prosecuted the case, skillfully navigating the legal complexities and securing the conviction and sentencing. This case serves as a stark reminder that those who profit from the misery of others will face the full weight of the law.
