Grimy Times

Springfield, Ill. – In a brazen move to rid the streets of illicit substances, a federal jury has returned a guilty verdict against Phillip C. Mayfield, 35, of Quincy, Illinois, for distribution of 50 grams or more of methamphetamine. Mayfield’s actions pose a severe threat to public safety, and his conviction brings solace to the community.

The trial, which spanned over three days before U.S. District Judge Colleen R. Lawless, revealed the shocking extent of Mayfield’s involvement in the illicit methamphetamine trade. In February 2023, Mayfield sold over 50 grams of methamphetamine to a confidential informant in a grocery store parking lot in Quincy. This was not an isolated incident, as evidence established that, in March 2023, Mayfield sold over 50 grams of methamphetamine to a confidential informant in an apartment parking lot in Quincy.

Mayfield is currently in the custody of the United States Marshals Service, where he has been since his arrest on June 20, 2023. His sentence will be determined at a hearing scheduled for October 29, 2024, at the U.S. Courthouse in Springfield, Illinois.

At sentencing, Mayfield faces statutory penalties of not less than 10 years and up to a life term of imprisonment; at least 5 years and up to a life term of supervised release; up to a $10,000,000 fine; and a $100 special assessment.

The case investigation was conducted by the Illinois State Police West Central Illinois Task Force. Valuable assistance was provided by the Drug Enforcement Administration Springfield Resident Office. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sarah E. Seberger and Matthew Z. Weir represented the government at trial.

Mayfield’s conviction serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of methamphetamine distribution.
