Local Man Sentenced to 5 Years for Distributing Methamphetamine

A Quincy, Illinois man, Damond Thomas, 31, was sentenced to 60 months in prison for distributing methamphetamine. Thomas was found responsible for the distribution of more than 60 grams of methamphetamine in the Central District of Illinois.

The crime was investigated by the Illinois State Police, the Quincy Police Department, and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Z. Weir represented the government in the prosecution.

Thomas was indicted in September 2023 and pleaded guilty in May 2024. At the sentencing hearing, U.S. District Judge Sue E. Myerscough concluded that Thomas was responsible for the distribution of more than 60 grams of methamphetamine.

The case against Thomas is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in the community. The program brings together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to make neighborhoods safer.

According to court documents, Thomas’ criminal history includes two Illinois state court convictions involving weapons offenses. The statutory penalties for distributing methamphetamine are up to 40 years imprisonment, up to a $5,000,000 fine, and up to a life term of supervised release.
