SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Phillip C. Mayfield, 35, of Quincy, Illinois, is staring down a potential life sentence after a federal jury found him guilty of distributing a significant quantity of methamphetamine. The verdict, delivered June 21, 2024, caps a case built on damning evidence of repeated drug deals in the heartland of Illinois.
The trial, presided over by U.S. District Judge Colleen R. Lawless, unfolded over three days. Prosecutors Sarah E. Seberger and Matthew Z. Weir presented evidence showing that in February 2023, Mayfield peddled over 50 grams of methamphetamine to a confidential informant in the parking lot of a Quincy grocery store. He wasn’t a one-time offender; just a month later, in March 2023, Mayfield allegedly repeated the offense, selling another 50 grams of the highly addictive drug to the same informant, this time in an apartment parking lot.
The Illinois State Police West Central Illinois Task Force spearheaded the investigation, with crucial support from the Drug Enforcement Administration Springfield Resident Office. Their work culminated in Mayfield’s arrest on June 20, 2023. Since then, he’s been held in the custody of the United States Marshals Service, awaiting this grim outcome.
Mayfield isn’t facing a slap on the wrist. At his sentencing, scheduled for October 29, 2024, at the U.S. Courthouse in Springfield, Illinois, he could receive a minimum of 10 years and potentially a life term behind bars. Beyond imprisonment, the court could impose a supervised release period of at least five years, extending to a lifetime, and a hefty fine of up to $10,000,000, plus a mandatory $100 special assessment.
This conviction sends a clear message: large-scale drug distribution in Illinois will be met with the full force of federal law. The case highlights the ongoing struggle to stem the flow of methamphetamine into communities across the state, and the dedication of law enforcement to dismantle these operations.
The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing of Phillip C. Mayfield. This is yet another example of the drug trade’s corrosive effect on the American heartland and the consequences faced by those who profit from addiction.
