Brian A. Mudd, 60, of Ruma, Illinois, is headed to federal prison for 135 months after admitting his role in a high-purity methamphetamine distribution ring that flooded Randolph County with ‘ice’—meth at 80% purity or higher. The sentence, handed down February 8, 2018, marks the end of a multi-agency crackdown on a network that turned rural southern Illinois into a conduit for deadly drugs.
Mudd pleaded guilty to a single-count federal indictment charging him with conspiracy to distribute more than 50 grams of a substance containing methamphetamine. In court, he admitted to sourcing dealer-level quantities of ice and funneling it through a network of local distributors. His operation wasn’t small-time: Mudd acknowledged that his conduct involved between 500 grams and 1.5 kilograms of the drug—a volume that underscores the scale of the trafficking.
The heat came down on December 6, 2016, when Mudd sold a batch of ice directly to a confidential source working with law enforcement. That controlled buy triggered a series of raids on his home and vehicle, turning up pre-recorded U.S. currency used in the sting, a digital scale, drug paraphernalia, and other damning evidence of ongoing distribution and personal use.
Federal prosecutors painted Mudd as a central node in a regional drug web. His guilty plea confirmed he wasn’t just a user—he was a supplier, moving potent meth across county lines and fueling addiction in tight-knit communities already strained by the opioid and meth crises.
The probe was a joint effort involving the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, Chester Police Department, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Cape Girardeau, Missouri Police Department, and the Drug Enforcement Administration. The Randolph County State’s Attorney’s Office also played a key role in building the case from the ground up.
Assistant United States Attorneys Amanda A. Robertson and Adam E. Hanna prosecuted the case, securing a sentence that includes 135 months behind bars followed by four years of supervised release. For Mudd, the cost of his criminal choices is now measured in years—not grams.
