Robert T. Turner, 47, of Lawrenceville, Illinois, is headed to federal prison for trafficking methamphetamine across Lawrence County in early 2017. The conviction caps a multi-agency crackdown on a local drug network that turned deadly doses into quick cash.
On February 6, 2018, Turner was sentenced to 264 months in federal prison followed by ten years of supervised release. The sentence, handed down in the Southern District of Illinois, stems from three counts of methamphetamine-related offenses to which Turner pleaded guilty.
The first count charged Turner with distributing methamphetamine on March 17, 2017, in Lawrence County. The second count covered another distribution just weeks later on April 5, 2017, in the same jurisdiction. The third charge, filed for April 6, 2017, accused Turner of possessing with intent to distribute a mixture containing 50 grams or more of pure methamphetamine (Ice), or 500 grams or more of a meth-laced substance.
According to prosecutors, the sheer volume of drugs involved placed Turner’s actions in the highest tier of federal drug penalties. Each transaction fed into a broader pattern of distribution that law enforcement had been tracking for months before closing in.
The investigation was led by the Flora Police Department and supported by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, the Illinois State Police Southeastern Illinois Drug Task Force, the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, and the Lawrenceville Police Department. Their joint operation dismantled a key supply chain operating under the radar in southern Illinois.
Donald S. Boyce, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, confirmed the sentencing and emphasized that persistent drug trafficking will be met with maximum legal consequences. Turner’s case underscores the federal government’s ongoing push to disrupt methamphetamine networks at every level.
