Marcus M. Nelson, Methamphetamine Distribution, Missouri 2023

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO – Another dealer peddling poison in the Midwest is off the streets. Marcus M. Nelson, 42, of Cairo, Illinois, received a crushing 188-month federal prison sentence Wednesday for flooding the streets with methamphetamine, according to the Department of Justice.

U.S. District Judge Stephen N. Limbaugh Jr. handed down the lengthy sentence after Nelson pleaded guilty in March to two counts of distributing methamphetamine in U.S. District Court in Cape Girardeau. The case, built by the Drug Enforcement Administration, revealed a pattern of significant drug dealing. Nelson wasn’t moving crumbs; he was dealing in ounces.

The DEA’s investigation revealed that Nelson sold 157 grams of meth for $1,600 to a confidential informant on July 10, 2023, at a residence in Cape Girardeau. But that was just a warm-up. Just six days later, on July 16, 2023, Nelson upped the ante, delivering a staggering 446 grams – nearly a full pound – of methamphetamine for an initial payment of $2,500, with a promise of $700 more to come. The informant’s testimony linked Nelson to multiple previous large-scale meth transactions.

This isn’t Nelson’s first rodeo with the law. The 188-month sentence will run consecutive to any time he receives for violating parole on a previous robbery conviction. Back in 2001, Nelson was already sentenced to a hefty 140 months in prison following a conviction for conspiracy to distribute and distribution of cocaine base in the Southern District of Illinois. Apparently, a lengthy prison stay didn’t deter him from returning to a life of crime.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy Willis skillfully prosecuted the case, ensuring Nelson faced the full weight of the law. The DEA’s relentless work continues to dismantle these drug networks, but the demand – and the supply – keeps flowing. This conviction, however, sends a clear message: dealing meth comes with a serious price.

Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on other federal crimes impacting communities across the nation. This sentence should offer some relief to Cape Girardeau residents, but the fight against drug trafficking is far from over.
