GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN — In a bold move against gun violence, Kalamazoo resident Juwara Jawan Compton, Jr., 32, was today sentenced to 64 months in federal prison for possessing an illegal machinegun. Prosecuted under the Safe Summer 2023 program, Compton’s crime involved a loaded firearm with an extended magazine and a “switch” converting it into a deadly automatic weapon.
“Our Safe Summer Program is underway, and we mean business,” said U.S. Attorney Mark Totten. “Compton’s actions are a stark reminder of the dangers of illegal firearms in our communities.”
The incident unfolded in September 2023 at the Thunderbird Bar, where officers discovered Compton’s vehicle with a loaded handgun equipped as a machinegun. Compton has a history of violent behavior, including domestic violence and assault charges.
“This is not just about a weapon,” said ATF Detroit Special Agent in Charge James Deir. “Compton’s actions are part of a pattern of violence that must be stopped.”
Judge Jarbou emphasized the severity of Compton’s crime, noting his extensive criminal history and lack of respect for the law. The Safe Summer 2024 program was announced on May 23rd, focusing federal efforts on illegal firearms offenses.
Gun violence remains a critical issue across the nation. The Safe Summer Program aims to hold individuals accountable who contribute to this crisis.”
