Robert Leal, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Ohio 2023

TOLEDO, OH – Toledo’s Robert Leal, a 62-year-old repeat offender, has been sentenced to 100 months in federal prison for violating firearms laws. According to Steven M. Dettelbach, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, and Stephen D. Anthony, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Cleveland office, the sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge James Carr.

Leal pleaded guilty earlier this year to being a felon in possession of a firearm. In January 2013, law enforcement officers discovered Leal harboring a Raven 25-caliber handgun and a Mossberg 12-gauge pistol grip shotgun at his home. The court documents revealed that the firearms were illegal for him to possess due to prior drug and firearms convictions from Michigan.

Assistant United States Attorney Alissa P. Sterling is handling the case, which was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Toledo Police Department, and the Toledo Metro Drug Task Force. Leal’s nine-year sentence underscores the serious consequences for those who flout federal firearm laws in Ohio.

This is a stark reminder that the Northern District of Ohio remains vigilant in enforcing its stringent gun control measures to keep communities safe. The sentence sends a clear message to other felons considering illegal firearms possession: justice will be swift and severe.
