Wali Black Murphy, Distribution of Heroin, West Virginia 2016

CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – A Detroit man is facing serious federal charges after a Monongalia County grand jury returned an indictment accusing him of running drugs through the Mountain State. Wali “Black” Murphy, 24, is accused of flooding the area with heroin and cocaine base.

Murphy was indicted on four counts of “Distribution of Heroin,” a charge that carries potentially significant prison time. He’s also facing one count of “Possession with the Intent to Distribute Cocaine Base” and another of “Possession with Intent to Distribute Heroin.” The feds allege this activity took place between September and December of 2016 – a cold, dark period for those peddling poison in Monongalia County.

Acting United States Attorney Betsy Steinfeld Jividen announced the indictment today, but cautioned that it’s just the first step. “An indictment is merely an accusation,” she stated, emphasizing the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. But for Murphy, the game has changed. He’s now facing the full weight of the federal justice system.

The investigation was spearheaded by the Mon Metro Drug & Violent Crime Task Force, a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA)-funded initiative. These task forces are designed to hit drug operations hard, and it appears they’ve landed a significant player. Sources within the task force, speaking off the record, suggest Murphy wasn’t operating alone, and further indictments are possible.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Zelda E. Wesley will be prosecuting the case, and she has a reputation for being a relentless advocate in drug trafficking cases. Expect a tough fight. Murphy’s defense will undoubtedly attempt to poke holes in the government’s evidence, but the HIDTA task force is known for meticulous investigations.

The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it unfolds. The streets of Monongalia County, and the lives affected by the drug trade, demand accountability. Murphy’s next court date has not yet been announced, but we’ll be there to report it when it is. Remember, an indictment isn’t a conviction, but it’s a clear signal that law enforcement is taking this seriously.
