A 36-year-old man from Brownsville, Texas, has been sentenced to prison for his role in a methamphetamine trafficking ring.
Luis Alberto Gomez pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute 15 kilograms of meth on November 23, 2021. U.S. District Judge Rolando Olvera ordered him to serve 108 months in federal prison, to be followed by two years of supervised release.
The investigation revealed that Gomez and his girlfriend, Vanessa Lee Vasquez, had crossed the port of entry from Matamoros, Taumalipas, Mexico, the day prior to the arrest, with Gomez attempting to flee to Mexico via the Veteran’s Bridge.
On January 27, 2021, authorities stopped Vasquez for a traffic violation and discovered a secret compartment containing 16 bundles of meth, weighing 15.18 kilograms and valued at approximately $45,000.
Gomez panicked and decided to flee to Mexico after seeing law enforcement pull over his girlfriend, according to his plea agreement.
Vasquez was previously sentenced to 108 months in prison on December 1, 2021, for her role in the conspiracy.
The investigation was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations, with the assistance of the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Elena Salinas prosecuted the case.
Gomez has been in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility, where he will serve his sentence.
