DALLAS, TX – A hail of bullets ripped through a Mansfield, Texas home in April 2022, narrowly missing a child as a violent feud escalated. On Monday, Alexandro Mauricio Campos, 27, received a 15-year federal prison sentence for his role in the drive-by shooting and related firearm offenses. The sentencing, handed down by U.S. District Judge David C. Godbey, closes a case that exposed a pattern of escalating violence fueled by a dangerous street gang and a history of abuse.
According to court documents, Mansfield Police responded to reports of gunfire on April 24, 2022, finding two vehicles and a residence riddled with bullet holes. Bullets penetrated a child’s bedroom, the laundry room, and the garage. Campos’s ex-girlfriend and their young child were inside the house at the time of the shooting. Investigators quickly discovered the attack wasn’t random; Campos had allegedly sent threatening text messages to his ex-girlfriend prior to the incident, and one of the targeted vehicles had been previously shot by Campos – bullet holes crudely covered with electrical tape.
The weapon of choice? An AK-47. A neighbor’s home security camera captured the shooting, providing crucial evidence for investigators. Three days later, the U.S. Marshal’s North Texas Fugitive Task Force apprehended Campos. A search of his vehicle revealed another large black AK-47 style pistol on the driver’s floorboard, along with a significant quantity of ammunition. Ballistic testing definitively linked this firearm to the April 24th drive-by.
This wasn’t Campos’s first brush with the law. Court records show he has a 2018 felony conviction for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, resulting in a 2-year prison sentence. Prosecutors highlighted a disturbing pattern of violent behavior, particularly directed towards women. Further investigation revealed Campos was also connected to a similar incident involving another AK-47 style pistol in Mesquite, Texas, in June 2021.
U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, Leigha Simonton, announced the sentencing, emphasizing the seriousness of the crimes. Campos pleaded guilty in March 2023 to two counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The case was led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ Dallas Field Division, with support from the U.S. Marshal’s North Texas Fugitive Task Force, the Mansfield Police Department, and the Mesquite Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Gary Tromblay prosecuted the case.
The 15-year sentence sends a clear message: bringing illegal firearms into our communities and unleashing them in violent acts will be met with the full force of federal law. While this conviction provides some measure of justice for the victims, the case underscores the ongoing challenge of gang violence and the need for continued collaboration between law enforcement agencies to keep dangerous individuals off the streets.
