ELKINS, W.VA. — A 19-year-old Randolph County woman admitted to holding a loaded .9mm pistol on West Virginia soil—despite being legally barred from touching a firearm. Alexis McDonald, of Elkins, pleaded guilty this week to one count of ‘Felon in Possession of a Firearm,’ a federal charge carrying a potential decade behind bars.
McDonald’s criminal record includes a prior felony conviction in Pennsylvania, stripping her of the legal right to possess any firearm under federal law. Despite that, she was found in possession of the handgun in Barbour County in July 2016—more than five years ago, yet still a ticking time bomb of federal scrutiny until her arrest and plea.
Her admission came during a federal hearing overseen by U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael John Aloi, where McDonald offered no defense and confirmed her possession of the weapon. The charge, prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen D. Warner, underscores the feds’ relentless pursuit of repeat offenders and gun law violators in rural Appalachia.
Acting United States Attorney Betsy Steinfeld Jividen confirmed the plea, emphasizing that individuals with felony records who arm themselves endanger communities and trigger swift federal consequences. “The right to possess a firearm is forfeited upon felony conviction,” Jividen said in a statement. “We will not tolerate the risks posed by armed felons.”
McDonald now faces up to ten years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000. While the statutory maximum looms, the actual sentence will be calculated under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, weighing the severity of the offense and McDonald’s full criminal history.
The case was investigated by the Mountain Region Drug and Violent Crime Task Force, a multi-agency unit targeting violent offenders and illegal gun trafficking across central West Virginia. Details about where the firearm was recovered or how McDonald obtained it were not disclosed in court records.
