A Pittsburgh woman has been charged with stealing over $1,000 in government money from the United States Postal Service.
According to court documents, Alexis Riley, 25, allegedly embezzled, stole, purloined, and converted to her own use, money of the United States belonging to the United States Postal Service, in excess of $1,000, from October 2019 through September 2020.
The indictment was announced by Acting United States Attorney Stephen R. Kaufman.
Riley faces a one-count indictment for theft of government money. The law provides for a total sentence of not more than 10 years’ imprisonment, a fine of not more than $250,000.00, or both.
Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed would be based upon the seriousness of the offense and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.
Assistant United States Attorney Nicole Vasquez Schmitt is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government.
The United States Postal Service, Office of the Inspector General, conducted the investigation leading to the indictment in this case.
An indictment is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
Riley’s case is a reminder of the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions and ensuring that government funds are used for their intended purpose.
