Defendant Plundered Pistol from Homicide Scene
In a stunning display of audacity, Alfred C. Crater, Jr., 40, of Kansas City, Mo., was sentenced to nine years and two months in federal prison without parole for stealing a firearm from a murder victim.
Crater, who has a long history of run-ins with the law, stole the Hi-Point .40-caliber pistol from Anthony Wayne Van Buren, a murder victim, on February 19, 2012. The brazen thief had the audacity to take the pistol from the victim’s body before the police arrived at the crime scene.
Crater’s egregious offense was uncovered when he was stopped by police in the area of Linwood and Indiana, Kansas City, Mo., where they found him in possession of the stolen pistol.
This is not Crater’s first rodeo with the law. He has a staggering nine felony convictions, including a prior federal felony conviction for being a felon in possession of a firearm. At the time of the offense, Crater was also on state probation.
U.S. District Judge Howard F. Sachs handed down the sentence, which is a testament to the severity of the crime and the defendant’s lengthy record of felonies.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney D. Michael Green and investigated by the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Crater’s sentence serves as a stark reminder that the law will not tolerate such egregious behavior and that those who commit such crimes will be held accountable for their actions.
