Alfredo Mendoza, 34, of Warden, Washington, is headed to federal prison for 15 years after being sentenced Monday on charges of Production of Child Pornography and being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Salvador Mendoza, Jr., marks the end of a disturbing case that exposed not only the sexual exploitation of a minor but a pattern of criminal behavior rooted in violence and manipulation.
The trouble began in November 2015 when law enforcement targeted Mendoza in connection with a string of gang-related drive-by shootings in Grant County. A search of his home turned up a loaded 9mm revolver in his bedroom. Forensic testing linked Mendoza’s thumbprint directly to the weapon—a clear violation of federal law given his prior felony record. His cellphone was also seized, initially sought as evidence in the shooting probe, but what investigators found would escalate the case into something far darker.
While combing through Mendoza’s phone, officers stumbled on images of child pornography. A second warrant was swiftly obtained. The follow-up investigation revealed Mendoza had directed an underage girl—friend of his daughter and at one time living under his roof—to take explicit photos and send them via text. He also produced videos of sexual acts with the minor, some filmed in his own bedroom. One video shows him positioning the camera, a chilling testament to premeditation and control.
Mendoza pleaded guilty on August 30, 2016, to both counts. At sentencing, Judge Mendoza, Jr. didn’t mince words. He called the victim “a child” and condemned the “manner in which [Mendoza] manipulated” her. The judge noted Mendoza had a chance to break free from a life steeped in gang violence and criminal conduct. Instead, he chose exploitation. “You created this,” the judge said. “And now you have the ability to change.” But the damage, he made clear, was done.
U.S. Attorney Michael C. Ormsby, who oversaw the case for the Eastern District of Washington, praised the collaboration between state and federal agencies. “This case is a superb example of the excellent work that can be accomplished when state and federal law enforcement work together,” Ormsby said, specifically crediting the Grant County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. He warned that crimes involving child pornography and illegal firearms will be met with full force by prosecutors and investigators.
Mendoza will serve 15 years in federal prison, followed by a mandatory 10-year term of court supervision. He will also be required to register as a sex offender for life. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Alison L. Gregoire and Allyson Edwards. For now, the cameras are off—but the record remains, burned into federal files and the memory of a child he betrayed.
