A fugitive from Mexico has been caught and charged for re-entering the United States after having been previously removed as a convicted felon. On April 30, 2018, the U.S. Border Patrol received a phone call from a concerned citizen in Biloxi, Mississippi. The caller reported that Alfredo Pavon-Carranza, 28, had allegedly returned to his residence and made a threat against a neighbor. This information was corroborated by a Biloxi Police Department ‘Be On the Look-out’ Bulletin and Department of Homeland Security records checks.
Subsequent surveillance confirmed Pavon-Carranza’s address and he was subsequently arrested. Pavon-Carranza had been convicted of a felony offense before his removal from the United States. Specifically, on April 4, 2008, he was convicted of Aggravated Assault and was sentenced to five years in state prison.
On September 13, 2017, a U.S. Immigration Judge in Oakdale, Louisiana, had ordered Pavon-Carranza removed from the United States. He departed the United States on October 3, 2017.
Pavon-Carranza has pled guilty to unlawfully re-entering the United States as a convicted felon. He is scheduled to be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Sul Ozerden on November 8, 2018. If convicted, Pavon-Carranza faces a potential maximum penalty of 10 years in prison followed by three years of supervised release and a maximum $250,000 fine.
U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst commended the work of the City of Biloxi Police Department and the United States Border Patrol in the case. Assistant United States Attorney Stan Harris is the prosecutor for the case.
