Defendant’s Despicable Act Rocks Natchez Community
Kiandas Washington, 19, of Jackson, Mississippi, has been sentenced to 13 months in federal prison for the theft of a firearm from a licensed dealer, announced U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst and Special Agent in Charge Dana Nichols with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
On September 15, 2017, the Natchez Police responded to a larceny/shoplifting incident at Bowie Outfitters in Natchez. The store’s two clerks were distracted by three individuals when one of them sneaked a Glock model 43, 9 mm caliber pistol from a box on the counter and stuffed it into his pocket.
Natchez Police investigators reviewed the surveillance footage and identified the culprit as Kiandas Washington and his accomplice. Later that same day, police investigators interviewed Washington’s companion, who revealed that Kiandas Washington was the one responsible for stealing the firearm. Washington was also questioned by police and confessed to the crime.
But that’s not the end of the story. Washington then contacted another individual who brought back the stolen firearm and surrendered it to the police investigators. The case was a major breakthrough for law enforcement, and it serves as a warning to those who would seek to exploit the system.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Southwest Mississippi Interdiction Narcotics Enforcement Unit. Assistant U.S. Attorney Keesha D. Middleton led the prosecution.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst commended the law enforcement agencies involved in the case, saying, ‘We appreciate the hard work and dedication of our law enforcement partners in bringing this case to a successful conclusion.’ The sentence handed down to Kiandas Washington is a testament to the commitment of the justice system to hold accountable those who break the law.
The sentence imposed on Kiandas Washington serves as a reminder that those who engage in such despicable acts will face the consequences. Washington’s 13-month prison sentence, followed by three years of supervised release, is a fitting punishment for his crime.
